**[Alini Garcia](https://www.cohart.com/art.alini)** is an emerging abstract artist based in Vancouver, Canada, originally from Brazil. ##### Can you describe your artistic process? What materials and techniques do you typically use?

My artistic process starts with connecting to my emotions. I paint what I’m feeling at that moment, which gives each piece a unique starting point. Once I’ve tapped into that, I begin with the first layer—it’s often the hardest part, but it sets the foundation. From there, I find my flow and keep building, adding layer upon layer. I use acrylic paint, oil pastels, and sometimes collage to create depth and texture. Recently, I’ve been experimenting with raw and primed canvas, exploring how each one influences the look and feel of the work.

##### What emotions do you experience when creating your art, and how do they influence the final piece?

When I’m creating, I let whatever I'm feeling at that moment come through. My emotions really shape the final piece—if I’m feeling light or joyful, the colors tend to be more vibrant, with fluid movements. But if I’m going through something tougher or more reflective, the work often ends up with earthy tones, sober colors, and minimal details. Each piece becomes a snapshot of what was going on in my mind and life at the time.

##### What is your approach to experimenting with new techniques or styles?

I’m always trying something new with my abstract pieces. I like to say I don’t have a fixed style—I have a language. I feel like I’m talking through each piece, and depending on what I want to “say,” I might try different techniques or styles. Experimenting is a natural part of my process… it keeps my work fresh and lets me communicate more freely.

##### Can you describe a turning point in your artistic career that significantly impacted your work?

These last couple of years have been huge for me. Having my [first solo show](https://www.cacv.ca/discover-the-vibrant-world-of-abstract-expressionism-abstractly-sane-a-solo-exhibition-by-brazilian-artist-alini-garcia/) this year was an amazing achievement, and it helped me realize that anything is possible if I put myself out there. Around the same time, I discovered Cohart, where I made one of my first big sales. The platform gave me all the support I needed to start feeling confident about selling my work and sharing it with the world. Both of these experiences pushed me forward and made me feel more certain of my path.

##### How do you balance personal expression with audience expectations in your work?

I always try to stay true to myself in my pieces. Sure, people have their preferences, but I think abstract art has this unique quality where people connect with it in their own way. I believe if you look closely enough, you'll find something that resonates with you, even if it’s different from what I put into it.

##### What do you think is the most important quality for an artist to possess?

Perseverance, hands down. Starting an art career isn’t easy, and you really have to stick with it. Creativity is important, of course, but sometimes just the act of trying and trying again is what really pushes you forward, even more than inspiration.

##### Has your cultural background influenced your artistic practice?

Absolutely. I see my art as a way of transcending language barriers—being an immigrant, I sometimes feel those barriers in everyday life, but I never feel them through art. My background and life experiences definitely influence my work. Like I said, I paint what I feel, and who we are is shaped by what we’ve been through.

##### Do you have any rituals or routines that help you develop a creative mindset?

I find that my creativity is at its peak after something impactful happens in my day—whether it’s positive or negative. I guess I need an outlet. So, while I don’t have a set ritual, I do try to listen to myself before each piece and see what I want to express.

##### How do you perceive the relationship between art and mental health?

This is such a good question. I feel like art is deeply connected to mental health—it’s a form of self-expression and an escape. Each piece helps me work through a tough moment or capture a joyful one. Art is like therapy; it lets me process and transcend different experiences.

##### How do you see the role of art in today's digital age?

I think it’s important for artists to stay aware of what’s happening in the digital world. I think it’s important for artists to stay aware of what’s out there and use it to our advantage. Digital tools give us a way to connect with more people, share our art on a much broader scale, and reach audiences we might not otherwise. It’s all about using these tools wisely to expand our reach and let people experience our work in new ways.
