**[Brittany Clifford](https://www.cohart.com/brittanycliffordart/profile)** is a self-taught abstract artist hailing from Westchester, New York. Driven by a deep passion for art and design, she pursued her studies at the Fashion Institute of Technology, focusing on Fashion Design and Textile Design. Brittany’s artistic journey began as a means of self-expression, where she found, in painting, a direct and unfiltered way to convey her innermost emotions.

Her large-scale works are characterized by the use of watered-down acrylics, spray paint, and oil pastel, allowing her to craft dream-like, ethereal compositions that captivate the viewer. Brittany describes her creative process as a pursuit to communicate what words cannot: "I create to be seen, I create to be experienced."

##### Can you describe your artistic process? What materials and techniques do you typically use? 

My artistic practice is a deeply personal exploration of emotions, experiences, and places. My practice is shaped by surroundings, state of mind, and music. I use a variety of materials when I paint, including a cake spreader and a squeegee! I love finding new and innovative materials during my process, so I’m also asking my artist friends for new ideas.  

##### What themes or concepts are you most passionate about exploring in your work? 

I’m most passionate about exploring themes that delve into the emotional, intangible, and transformative aspects of human experience. I’m excited to see where my next chapter of life takes me!

##### How do your personal experiences influence your art? 

My personal experiences are at the core of my artistic practice. These experiences are primarily inspired by echoes of the past, whether that be relationships, places, or events. I like to let the abstraction of my paintings speak for itself.

##### Who are some of your biggest artistic influences, and how have they shaped your practice? 

This is a tough one, there are so many! I’ll start with my favorite – Sam Gilliam. He has been my favorite artist for as long as I can remember. His use of color is strategic and captivating. Other artists include Ian Rayer-Smith and Roy Aurinko. 

##### What role does collaboration play in your work? Have you collaborated with other artists or disciplines? 

I have collaborated with a few artists! I always find working with others exciting and inspiring. I’m currently working on a project with about 8 other artists that will debut in 2025 for Art Basel!

##### How do you define success as an artist? What does it look like for you? 

“All that matters is that you are making something you love, to the best of your ability, here and now.” I always find myself coming back to this quote by Rick Ruban. Success comes when you put the effort in. Investing in yourself is success, being able to create is success. 

##### Can you share a specific project or piece that holds special significance for you? Why is it important? 

All of my works are near and dear to my heart. Although I have to say, commissioned work is special to me. When someone wants me to create something for them with little to no direction and trusts me, that's indescribable! 

##### How do you engage with your audience, and what do you hope they take away from your work? 

My goal is to engage the viewer with the story I’m telling. My work speaks to those who’ve had similar experiences to mine. This also comes through in the titles of my paintings, which directly reflect the story that's being told. 

##### What challenges have you faced in your artistic career, and how have you overcome them? 

Challenges make an artist. I’ve gone through tons of self-doubt, creative blocks, and rejection. Each one contributes to my growth, strength, and resilience.

##### In what ways (if any) do you think art can contribute to social change or address current issues in society? 

I always hope that my art speaks to others as it speaks to me. Art is something personal, it can heal those who need it the most.
