**[Liz Slome](https://www.cohart.com/lizslome/profile)** is a painter based in Queens, New York, known for bringing her imagination to life through her art. Her work ranges from vivid interpretations of photos of close friends to original compositions born from her own creative vision. Painting the things she loves, Liz’s pieces are a personal and intimate exploration of connection and creativity.

##### Can you describe your artistic process? What materials and techniques do you typically use?

Once I've landed on a concept, I usually scour the internet in search of images that I can cut up and reconfigure together in Photoshop (sort of like a magazine collage) to create a cohesive reference image. I then sketch that image on canvas and bring it to life with acrylic paint.

##### What message or emotion do you hope to convey through your art?

I hope my paintings work as a momentary escape. My subject matter is typically snippets of daydreams or fantasies that distract me from the less idyllic realties of the world.

##### What role does spontaneity versus planning play in your creative process?

It mostly depends if I have a deadline. If I am preparing for a show or working on a commission, I am able to hurry the idea process along. If there is no deadline, the ideas are usually more spontaneous and often happen naturally. Usually I am able to come up with a concept for my next painting while working on my current one. Sometimes there is an aspect of my current one I want to expand on, change, or try differently in my next one. 

##### Can you discuss a piece that challenged you both technically and conceptually?

Some of the pieces I find the most challenging are ones that involve a landscape aspect. I find  the varying layers of detail in landscapes difficult to parse out. I think I overcame that well in “The Lookout”. I was also nervous I would not be able to bring the reflective property of the water to life. 

##### Can you share a specific project or piece that holds special significance for you? Why is it important?

“Making Friends” stands out to me. The painting conveys so well the bond and mutual respect between society and wildlife that I wish was prioritized. 

Additionally “Born to Walk Alone” because of the moodiness I was able to create. 

Lastly, “Out East”, because god, do I want to know the gossip the three girls are talking about.

##### If you could collaborate with any artist, living or deceased, who would it be and why?

At this time I really have no desire to collaborate artistically. I like having full control of my artistic process. 

##### How important is the exhibition space to the presentation of your work? Do you adapt your pieces for different venues or spaces?

The exhibition space does not affect the presentation of my work, except for when it comes to size. If the space allows for bigger paintings, I'll always go bigger.

##### How do you handle feedback on your work?

By snapping back “Ok, no one asked your opinion”. Even if I had.
