##### Can you describe your artistic process? What materials and techniques do you typically use?

My photographic artworks are a fusion of photographs, painting textures, and digital techniques. I begin with my camera to capture these raw materials, and from there, I dive into the creative editing process. Being deeply inspired by painters, I aim to create art photographs that evoke the qualities of the paintings I admire, while also conveying an ethereal atmosphere that invites the viewer’s imagination to wander beyond reality. 

##### What themes or concepts are you most passionate about exploring in your work?

For many years, I was deeply passionate about portrait art and capturing the delicate beauty of women and their emotions, but my focus has shifted after the Covid pandemic. I became drawn to the beauty of our planet and the urgent need to protect it. With the increasing frequency of natural disasters and the disappearance of so many beautiful places, I feel compelled to preserve their essence through my photography for future generations. My photographic series like "Ecosystem" (2015) and "Wall of Nature" (2019-ongoing) reflect this ongoing exploration of our planet’s fragility and splendor.

Since the pandemic, I’ve been splitting my time between photography and abstract painting. What makes my painting process particularly engaging is that it’s entirely unpredictable—each piece is unique, driven by the emotion of the moment and the physical forces at play during creation. The fluidity in my work mirrors not just the physical nature of the medium, but also a Taoism-inspired philosophical approach: relinquishing control and allowing nature to shape the final outcome. 

##### How do your personal experiences influence your art?

Landscape photography plays a significant role in my work, and traveling has been a huge part of my life, especially before the Covid pandemic. I’ve been fortunate to have visited over 50 countries, and many of my artworks are inspired by the photographs I’ve captured during these journeys. From Vietnam, Nepal, and India to Morocco, Iran, Egypt, Palestine, Israel, Greece, Italy, Spain, and beyond, each place has left its mark on my creative process.

##### Who are some of your biggest artistic influences, and how have they shaped your practice?

I’m deeply inspired by painters and their masterpieces, particularly the Old Masters— Rubens and Rembrandt—their use of light is simply sublime. I’m also drawn to the rich colors of the Pre-Raphaelite painters, and landscape paintings from the Romanticism period, which exude a sense of tranquility that greatly influences my own landscape and nature photography.

My academic background also plays a role in shaping my artistic vision. My first university degree was in Anglo-Saxon and American Languages and Cultures, which sparked my passion for literature. Over time, I developed a deep interest in Asian philosophy, English and French classic literature, and mystical Persian poetry—all of which have since become integral elements in my art.

Another source of inspiration for me is music, especially in languages I don’t understand such as Arabic, Turkish, Greek, Hindi. I often listen to music while creating art, allowing it to shape the mood and atmosphere of my work.

##### What role does collaboration play in your work? Have you collaborated with other artists or disciplines?

Collaboration has played a significant role in my work, particularly during the decade I spent working on fashion photo sessions. I've had the opportunity to collaborate with a wide range of creative professionals, including models, makeup artists, hair stylists, fashion designers, filmmakers, and more. Over the years, I’ve organized more than 100 photo sessions and worked with over 500 artists, often serving as the art director, producer, stylist, and photographer. Notably, I collaborated with a team of 25 people for a Talents Shooting for Vogue Italy.

Lately, I’ve stepped away from fashion photography, and when I do engage in it, I prefer working with smaller teams to emphasize the emotional aspects of the artwork rather than the fashion elements. Now that my focus has shifted entirely to nature photography and abstract painting, I mostly work alone.

##### How do you define success as an artist? What does it look like for you? 

My definition of success has definitely changed over time. At the beginning of my artistic journey, I used to see success as having my work published by art curators or featured by journalists in newspapers or magazines. 

Over time, my view on success has shifted to something much more personal—when art collectors reach out with kind and encouraging words: “Thank you, Viet Ha, this is such a beautiful artwork; it fills our space with positive energy through its bright, vibrant colors, a contrast to the darkness we often see in the world.” That kind of connection means a lot to me now.

To me, success also means being willing to leave behind what you've been doing well and successfully, and daring to dive into the unknown—exploring new artistic territories.

##### Can you share a specific project or piece that holds special significance for you? Why is it important?

After many years as an artist, I still have a fondness for the photographs I created at the beginning of my career. In particular, my "Lotus Lake" series holds significant importance in my portfolio.

The lotus flower is revered in many Buddhist cultures as a symbol of purity, enlightenment, self-regeneration, and rebirth. Its qualities serve as a beautiful analogy for the human experience: even when its roots are submerged in murky waters, the lotus blossoms into a stunning flower. Many Asian countries, including Vietnam and India, celebrate the lotus as their national flower, and throughout history, it has been a prominent theme in various art forms, including paintings, architecture, and sculptures.

I believe it’s essential to create artwork that resonates deeply with human nature, which is why I hold these pieces close to my heart.


##### How do you engage with your audience, and what do you hope they take away from your work?

In my view, the purpose of art is to evoke a range of emotions and express perspectives on various topics. For me, the primary goal is to create a sense of inner peace and tranquility. I aim to guide my viewers into a state of calmness before leading them to explore themes of beauty or social awareness. When one is focused and relaxed, they are more receptive to messages conveyed through art.

##### What challenges have you faced in your artistic career, and how have you overcome them?

Artists often face significant challenges, including dealing with rejection and the financial instability as a freelancer. Especially at the start of their careers, many artists must confront the possibility that their creative visions could be seen as unattainable dreams. 

An artist cannot simply create whenever they wish; inspiration must strike first, often at unpredictable times. There are days when I sit in front of my computer, grappling with concepts for my photographs, only to find that nothing clicks. Then, out of the blue, inspiration flows, allowing me to generate multiple pieces. Similarly with painting, there are times I feel an urgent need to visit my studio, mix colors, and start creating—it’s as if I can't resist the pull of inspiration, even if it strikes late at night or early in the morning.

Early in my photography career, whenever I felt like giving up, I would recall a friend’s wise words: “If you give up now, you’ll lose everything you’ve accomplished so far. However, if you choose to keep moving forward, there’s a chance of success, even if you’re unsure when or if you’ll get there. Just continue trying and let your passion guide you.” Perseverance and passion are essential for overcoming challenges. I’ve learned to regard each rejection as part of the process and to keep forging ahead.

##### In what ways do you think art can contribute to social change or address current issues in society?

Art has a profound ability to contribute to social change and address pressing societal issues. Artists can convey their ideas and opinions on a range of topics, including social, political, and economic matters. In recent years, I have felt a strong urge to express my concerns regarding the critical issues of global climate change and environmental protection. Through my photographic series, such as "Ecosystem" (2015) and "Wall of Nature" (2019 - ongoing), I aim to inspire a sense of responsibility and urgency in my audience.
